Phase 1 - Renovation

Phase 1 was developed to modernize the exterior appearance and performance of the FAMU-FSU College of Engineering "Building A" through replacement of existing exterior wall panels and installation of a new fixed window system. The scope included primary building elevations and stair tower areas.

Existing Conditions
​
GRC reviewed existing wall and window assemblies and identified opportunities to improve the building envelope through a new exterior cladding system. Existing louvers were proposed to remain in place and be integrated into the new façade design where feasible.

Proposed Exterior Wall System
​
The project team evaluated the CENTRIA Concept Series Exterior Metal Panel System as the preferred replacement cladding solution. The system offers multiple panel profiles, widths, colors, and installation configurations, allowing flexibility in both performance and aesthetics. Key features reviewed included:

12-inch and 16-inch-wide panel profiles.

Horizontal and vertical panel orientations.
-
Multiple profile options (CS-200, CS-210, CS-220, CS-260, CS-610, CS-620, CS-630, and CS-660).
-
Microline extrusion joint systems.
-
Alternative corner detailing methods, including MicroSeam and metal trim corners.
Design Considerations

Several technical and architectural issues were evaluated during the design process:

Maximum panel lengths are limited to approximately 30 feet, requiring intermediate joints on taller wall sections.

Special detailing at panel transitions and building corners.
-
New window systems must integrate seamlessly with the new cladding.
-
Existing building features, including louvers, to be accommodated within the final design.
Architectural Options Studied

Option 1
A combination of vertical and horizontal CS-200 panels with visible Microline extrusions. This concept emphasizes panel orientation changes to create visual interest while retaining existing louvers and adding new fixed windows.

Option 2
A more uniform façade composition using predominantly horizontal CS-200 panels. This scheme provides a cleaner and simpler appearance while maintaining the proposed window replacement program.

Option 3
A more dynamic design incorporating alternating CS-200E and CS-260E panel patterns with enhanced architectural treatment at the building entry. This option creates greater façade depth, texture, and visual identity.

Conclusion
The proposed CENTRIA metal panel system and new fixed glazing are expected to improve the building's appearance, durability, and long-term maintainability while providing a contemporary architectural character. Among the concepts presented, Option 3 appeared to offer the strongest architectural expression through varied panel profiles and enhanced entry features.
